We’ve all been to a petting zoo (well hopefully!) and we’ve all seen the goats and the chickens… how about an Alpaca? These soft fuzzy camel-esque mammals are sure to be a hit with any kid! You have to remember to pet them on the neck though, otherwise they might spit right in your face! They love to be brushed though and most zoos will provide a bucket of brushes for you, so treat them nice and you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.
Now that I think about it, I think you should have a picnic with an Alpaca! They won’t eat much, and if they do it’s just going to be some veggies. One of the strange and amazing things about Alpacas is that when they eat, their food goes through three stomachs. They squeeze each and every last nutrient they can out of their food so they can survive on small meals. Their fuzzy mop-top heads are fun to fan your fingers through and the rest of their coat simply puts wool to shame. It sure would be nice to have a super fuzzy Alpaca around to snuggle with after a picnic on a cold night…
On a more serious note, if you happened to be an exotic animal owner with a large enough area to give an Alpaca a suitable home, you can buy one for as low as $10,000. The top tier show quality ones can go for upwards of a half million dollars! That’s a serious chunk of change but if you were into the breeding and showing business then that would be nothing more than a secure investment.
Back to the picnic… after you guys had your share of veggies it would of course be playtime! The best thing you can do is find or build a mound of dirt and play king of the mountain. This is one of the Alpaca’s favorite things to do and they will play for hours on end. They might fight dirty sometimes and start spitting, just bring some goggles and you’ll be in for the time of your life!
Alpacas are fuzzy, furry, fun, and friendly and you won’t be disappointed if you ever have an encounter.
